On the evening of 2 October 2026, at least 10 of our CS2 match servers crashed right after map veto, so matches could not start on them. Monitoring showed all servers healthy again at 00:01 on 3 October, and we are changing how servers reset between matches to prevent a repeat.
What happened
When a veto finished, the server changed to the first picked map and crashed. In our observation this hit servers that had already hosted an earlier match, and did not hit freshly restarted servers. We are still confirming the exact cause.
Impact
- At least 10 servers crashed between 22:43 on 2 October and 00:01 on 3 October.
- Monitoring recorded two outage windows: 13 minutes (22:47 to 23:00) and 44 minutes (23:17 to 00:01).
- Matches on affected servers could not start until the servers recovered.
Times are as logged by our servers and monitoring.
What we did
- Added an automated server restart workflow at 23:27 on 2 October.
- Expand monitoring to the new servers that have been created for SwitzerLAN
What we are doing next
- Return servers to a default map after every match. This is built but not live yet.
- Evaluate doing the same when a match is first set up.
- Follow upstream fixes in the server software we depend on.
